Sailing
Center
Architectural and engineering
services for the design of a 2,000 SF single-story facility
for the Chautauqua Institution
Sailing Center. This facility houses
the sailing center’s administrative offices, classrooms, and
changing facilities.
-
The design team
utilized an existing open air pavilion as the structural
skeleton for the facility. A cupola was
added
to increase airflow
throughout the structure as well as to give the center
a visible identity from the water. Beneath the cupola is
a central
gathering
space, in turn providing a two-story clear story space.
-
A twenty foot easily
collapsible glass wall was installed to allow small
sailing crafts to be brought inside on poor weather
days for instruction as well as to maximize exterior views
to
the
water.
-
A trellis was introduced
to block the suns rays from directly entering the naturally
cooled building.
-
A tile
red
colored
asphalt roof shingle was selected to complement
other historic red roofed structures on the water’s edge.
-
The
exterior integrates paved spaces for dry land sailing
instruction.
-
A sea wall, boardwalk,
small craft ramps, and an existing floating dock
were developed
to maximize the utilization of the waterfront.
