Faculty Studios
School

2007 AIA Award Winner
Foit-Albert Associates
provided architectural and engineering services for the design
of a 5,200 SF single-story facility for the Chautauqua Institution
School of Art. This facility houses eight studios for the faculty
of the School of Art.
The design team utilized
two existing structures that were to be demolished due to several
construction
projects on campus.
Both structures were divided in two sections creating four
separate structures. These structures were then relocated
to the west side of the existing School of Art facility and
arranged
to create dedicated view sheds to and from the existing structure.
All four cut ends of the structures were oriented inward
towards the School of Art and in-filled with a translucent
wall panel
so as to maximize the amount of northern light into the studios.
The openings were then framed with a modern cladding material
that would clearly delineate new work from old. Materials
and color palette were selected to blend with the rustic setting
and adjacent structures and woodlands as well as acknowledge
the artistic nature of this facility. A deck was constructed
to unify each individual structure and provide space for
outdoor
instruction.
