2007 AIA Award Winner
Foit-Albert Associates provided
architectural and engineering services for the design of
this 9,200 SF, single-story facility for the Chautauqua Institution
School of
Music. This facility consolidates rehearsal needs within
a single stand-alone structure. The building provides 26
individual rehearsal
spaces accommodating one to four musicians and an instructor.
All spaces were designed to provide identical acoustical
properties through
the use of acoustical treatments on the ceiling and wall surfaces.
Particular
care was taken
to ensure
that sound is accurately portrayed within the spaces without
bleeding into adjacent areas. All demising walls of the
building are constructed
of concrete masonry units, with all cores filled with grout
or sand, depending on the specific structural requirements.
All
rehearsal spaces are accessed from the building exterior,
allowing a central service corridor to be inserted into the building,
isolating
spaces on either side of the corridor. Special care has
been
taken to isolate mechanical equipment utilizing the service
corridor. Materials
and color palette were selected to blend with the rustic
setting and adjacent woodlands.
