Makowski Early Childhood Center
This pre-kindergarten through third grade school accommodates 1,300
children. To achieve a small-scale atmosphere and a manageable administrative
organization, the school is divided into three smaller “houses”, each
to handle 459 children, and vertically organized so a house unit is
comprised of the full range of student grades.
Serving the three academic houses is a central administrative unit,
the library suites, special reading and math units and the computer
rooms. A central main level kitchen, receiving and mechanical equipment
area is located along the north side of the building.
A comprehensive early childhood development program required multiple
services that have traditionally been scattered throughout the Buffalo
community. Sharing the central administrative block (the “fourth house”)
are the community functions called for in the design program. These
functions consist of a day care center for babies and toddlers of
teen-aged mothers, a latch key facility, a well-baby clinic, special
education classrooms, community use offices (including PTA) and a
community programs director.
