Fort Niagara
Visitor's Center - Youngstown, NY
The
Old Fort Niagara Visitors Center and Museum Project involved
the restoration and adaptive re-use of a former United
States Army warehouse located in Fort Niagara State Park.
This 10,000 SF warehouse was converted into
a state-of-the-art visitor center and
museum. The facility retains
the appearance of a 1930’s era Army warehouse, housing
visitor service facilities such as large restrooms, a comfortable
lobby, a tourist
information center, a theater/lecture hall, exhibition
galleries, admissions gate and museum shop.
Climate-controlled galleries
showcase the most significant objects in the collection.
Dominating the Main Gallery is the majestic 24-foot by
28-foot, 15-star American
flag that flew over the Fort during the War of 1812.
Site improvements
include the integration of the Museum and Visitor’s Center
site amenities with historic fort trails, entrance
paths and earth fortifications. This facility serves
as the new public entrance to Old Fort Niagara. The facility
is linked to the Old Fort by means of a new trail
that leads through
the fort’s outer works. The outer works, previously
covered by a modern parking lot, was restored to its
1759 appearance and
is interpreted through appropriate wayside exhibits.
The area was also landscaped to provide additional
open
space around historic
fortifications and to improve the view shed along the Niagara
River. Porfolio - Cultural & Heritage -
