Niagara Gorge Access Project
Observation Tower Modifications

Prospect Point Observation Tower underwent a complete renovation, with installation of four new elevators, demolition of upper tower floors, construction of a new exterior reflective glass curtain wall system, and complete replacement of the deck. New developments in the lower gorge accommodate support facilities for the Maid of the Mist attraction. Upper gorge improvements include a new gift shop, ticket sales and general site improvements. Services provided by the design team include:

Completion of the asbestos inspection for the Tower Modifications portion of the project.Plans and specifications were completed for the abatement of over 5,000 square feet of asbestos-containing materials, including caulks, roofing materials, floor tile and pipe insulation.
A variance for relief from New York State Department of Labor Code Rule 56 procedures for the abatement of asbestos was prepared due to complications of the extremely tight construction schedule, as well as the unique site conditions.
Provided construction inspection services for Ciminelli-Cowper Co., who handled the construction management task for NYSOPR&HP on this project.
Provided Asbestos Project Monitoring for the asbestos abatement portion of the tower demolition.

This unique project was complicated by extreme weather conditions (gale-force winds, freezing mist and constant drizzle) and heights of over 280 feet from the base of the gorge to the top of the tower.
