Gorge Access Project
Observation Tower Modifications
Prospect Point Observation
Tower underwent a complete renovation, with installation of
four new elevators, demolition of upper
tower floors, construction of a new exterior reflective glass
curtain wall system, and complete replacement of the deck.
New developments
in the lower gorge accommodate support facilities for the
Maid of the Mist attraction. Upper gorge improvements include
a
new gift shop, ticket sales and general site improvements.
Services provided by the design team include:
Completion of the asbestos
inspection for the Tower Modifications portion of the
project.Plans and
specifications were completed for the abatement
of over 5,000 square feet of asbestos-containing materials,
including
caulks, roofing materials, floor tile and pipe insulation.
A variance
for relief from New York State Department
of
Labor Code Rule 56 procedures for the abatement of
asbestos was prepared due to complications of the extremely
tight construction schedule, as well
as
the unique
site conditions.
Provided
construction inspection services for Ciminelli-Cowper
Co., who handled the construction
management task for NYSOPR&HP on this project.
Provided
Asbestos Project Monitoring for the asbestos abatement
portion of the tower demolition.
This unique project
was complicated by extreme weather conditions (gale-force winds,
freezing mist
and constant drizzle) and heights of over 280 feet from
the base of the gorge to the top of the tower.
