The Olmsted
School
The plan for the reuse of the H. H. Richardson
site is a collaboration among the stakeholders of the complex;
the City of Buffalo, the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, the Buffalo
Public Schools, and Buffalo State College. The plan components
are:
• The reuse of historic buildings and grounds (9, 10, 12, 38,
39, 40, 42, and 45, all the significant remaining buildings)
along with appropriate new construction as needed for programming
for a consolidated City of Buffalo Olmsted School (grades Pre-K
– 12). Funding for the project will build on the use of State
Education Department Building Aid Reimbursement, historic preservation
tax credits to attract private investment, and long term lease
arrangements which add significant stability to the reuse plan.
• The continued exploration of compatible private endeavors
to be housed at the site – a key component to the long-term
success of the project. The consolidation and expansion of the
very successful Olmsted School anchors a critical middle class
neighborhood and reduces the imminent urban flight of this tax
base.
• The shared use of playing fields among Buffalo State College,
the new consolidated Olmsted School and the adjacent Campus
West School incorporating the rehabilitation of the historic
Olmsted-designed landscape.
