Woodlawn Beach
State Park
The design team provided architectural
design services for permanent facilities within the comprehensive
framework for the long-term recreational development of Woodlawn
Beach State
Park. The primary goal of the plan was to provide public
access to the waterfront and develop a major public swimming beach
on the Lake Erie shoreline in close proximity to the City
of Buffalo and its suburbs.
Based on an Adirondack Lodge theme, the facility is an assemblage
of three discrete buildings under the cover of a continuous roof
system. The feature structure is a 5,200 square foot administrative
building housing an interpretive center, conferencing, offices,
and reception area. A bathhouse, comprising 4,000 square feet of
space, provides restrooms, changing facilities, and food service
for swimmers and beachcombers. Lifeguard offices, including emergency
first aid facilities, are provided in an adjacent 2,300 square
foot structure.
Dominant materials include cedar board on board vertical siding,
composite slate roofing, stone veneer, Douglas fir timber frame
members, porcelain tile and random ashlar concrete paving.
The building complex was carefully placed on the site to minimize
disturbance to the naturally occurring dunes, an environment unique
to Lake Erie and the Great Lakes region. A boardwalk, located just
beyond the interpretive center, spans over the dune environment
and delivers pedestrians to the sparkling white sand beach, preserving
the delicate ecosystem of the dunes.
