Streetscape
Improvement of Michigan Avenue - Buffalo, NY
When the City of Buffalo wanted
to beautify their streetscape around the Nash house development
(a station along the historic Underground Railroad),
they turned to Foit-Albert
Associates as the engineer to develop the design and oversee
the construction.
The
project included pavement milling and overlay, installing new
granite curb, exposed
aggregate concrete sidewalks
with the interpretive
Freedom Trail along Michigan Avenue, stamped concrete cross
walks, landscaping, retaining wall, drainage, street lighting
and traffic
signs.
One goal of this unique, challenging
project was to emphasize the historic significance of the
area including the Nash house and
Michigan
Street Baptist Church, both significant sites along the
Underground Railroad, the road to freedom for thousands of
slaves. Our
streetscape design has done this by recreating sidewalks
with the appearance of
age and including within these sidewalks a highlighted
path representing the Freedom Trail. Precast concrete markers
with an interpretive
design
accent the undulating path along its length.
The design team also
designed the parking lots, trails and landscaping within
the grounds of the Nash house and Michigan Street Baptist
Church. This area is designated as a tourist area and will
be visited by thousands of individuals when complete.
